Free Assessment Students have standardised reading, math's and spelling tests on entry. These give approximate, age achievement levels. Results are considered in relation to National Standard levels. Writing samples are taken and assessed for punctuation, grammar, language features and editing skills. National Standards and the English Curriculum, provide assessment reference points. Group tests, standardised in New Zealand, such as the Star, PAT: Comprehension and Mathematics and asTTle, may be given when appropriate. The Education Ministry ARBS, offer further assessment, resource material.
Reading Tuition at Clever Kiwis OECD research shows that while our top students are among the best in the world, over 20% of New Zealand adults, are reading below the level of eight years. We have a serious literacy problem in New Zealand. Ongoing assessment guides our reading programmes. Running records give us diagnostic information on the reading process for each student. Our individualised programmes employ the appropriate reading approach and learning style for each student, to give them the optimum tutoring help needed for successful catch-up or extension. There is an emphasis on comprehension, reading for meaning at all times. High interest materials are integral to the programme and we have an excellent library with a wide range of great books.
Did you know that research indicates that children as young as six can identify their achievement levels in the class, as accurately as the teacher! They can rate themselves and class members, as being in the top, middle or bottom groups. This knowledge can have a profound and life-long effect on confidence, behaviour and achievement.
After assessment the students are placed on the appropriate Essential List levels. Once completed students move on to workbook, computer, worksheet and related spelling materials. The transfer of spelling knowledge to writing is encouraged at all times.
Writing and spelling are the subjects in the most demand at the centre. Grammar and English are also a focus in the writing sessions. The English Curriculum and National Standard levels provide guidelines for study. Students edit their work in relation to spelling, language features, grammatical rules and punctuation. Study and research skills are taught, with students completing high interest reports.
Handwriting Tuition at Clever Kiwis Students are encouraged to take care with the presentation of their work. At times it is necessary to take formal, handwriting sessions with students. These lessons emphasize the correct holding of the pencil or pen and the appropriate pencil or pen, posture and correct formation and use of capital and lower- case letters. Exam papers at secondary school and at the tertiary level are still handwritten. It is important for students to practise legible writing even though much of their writing will be via typed text, as adults.
English Tuition and ESOL Tuition at Clever Kiwis The English Curriculum is covered under the literacy headings of reading, spelling, writing, grammar etc. Our ESOL tutors have completed post graduate, ESOL diploma work. They have over ten years combined experience teaching in Asia.
Mathematics Tuition and Numeracy Tuition at Clever Kiwis After assessment, students are placed according to their curriculum levels in mathematics. We make an effort to modify the programme, so that the work at the centre supports the work the student is doing at school in mathematics, at any given time. When the class works on fractions, we will work on fractions at the centre, with the student, if this is needed. During mathematics, there is emphasis on fluency with the Times Tables, as required.
We follow the New Zealand Curriculum and National Standards. We offer help in this area. You may learn your child's National Standard achievement levels, from teachers at parent-teacher meetings and from teachers' reports and students' portfolios. We complete our own assessments from age standardised, diagnostic materials. Our individualised, one-to-one programmes, are developed from our own and school information, parent discussions and ongoing observation and assessment. The assessment information shows a student's strengths and needs and guides us when planning an individualised teaching programme. It enables us to pinpoint and teach to the student's actual, learning strengths and needs. Our courses support New Zealand teaching methods and curriculum content.
Adult Courses - English and ESOL Tuition at The Literacy Specialists An experienced ESOL, or English tutor, will take one-to-one courses on your site.
Web: www.theliteracyspecialists.co.nz Students are given homework in all curriculum areas as/if required. We are sensitive to parental requests for more homework, or no homework. School homework workloads can be heavy and the material difficult. We do help primary school students with their school homework on request.
'One-to-one is invaluable, because they (the students), don't get it at school!' (Parent Comment, July 2011) 'I am thrilled with the progress Tara has made. She is so much more confident now and she has gone from not wanting to read anything, to asking if she can read some Harry Potter to us!' (Tara's Mum)
'We have been amazed at what has happened to her writing. Her teacher can't believe it either. There has been such a change and in such a short time too. You are going to have quite a few others coming from Bec's class.' (Rebecca's Mum)
'I do think he needs the spelling homework. Actually the awards make all the difference. He has them pinned on the wall above his bed and we think we will laminate them. He'll actually want to come here, even if he has had the day off school, so that's great!' (Adam's Mum)
Sam, aged 6 years and 4 months, was reading in the lowest reading group in his class at level 6. He was quickly losing confidence and his behaviour was suffering. He had an excellent memory and was saying the captions under the pictures in his readers without looking at the words. A bright boy he quickly responded to one-to-one. After one term of tuition, he gained a year in reading and much confidence. Steven, aged 10 years and 6 months read at age 7.00-7.05 years on entry. His spelling and writing levels were low. He had attended group, tutoring sessions with education centres in the past, but was still experiencing difficulty with reading and was reluctant to read. Steven's great strength was his motivation to improve. An excellent student, he benefited from one-to-one tuition. After two terms' tuition he gained 3 years in reading. He became confident about his reading and enjoyed reading books! An added bonus was the improvement in his spelling and writing levels; he could also now read his numeracy work. Our records document the successful achievement of students in different curriculum areas. They reinforce our belief that comprehensive assessments and one-to-one targeted teaching with individualised programmes, give students their best possible educational experience and their best chance of enjoying successful learning.
For nearly two years we have had limited advertising, to keep the fees affordable and great value. Feedback suggests, that our new student referrals, have been as a result of word of mouth! ***

I think that teachers do a fantastic job but the job has got much harder in recent years. I knew after-school tutoring centres were mushrooming and I wanted to offer parents and students a tuition model, specific to our education system. Hence our emphasis on a New Zealand Curriculum based model, and our offer of one-to-one tuition and affordable small group tuition.
